Sadly, it seems that fall is fast approaching. As with each passing summer comes the opportunity to discover and revive great music. If there is any season in which the world discovers music, it is during the summer months. So I thought it would be fun to put together a collection of some of the music that I enjoyed this summer or in summers past. Hopefully you enjoy discovering some of these great artists and add them to your collection.

1. Phoenix
Phoenix is a Grammy-winning pop-rock band from France that has really taken off since late 2009. Their single “1901” took the charts by storm and has really pushed them into the spotlight. Here we get a chance to see Phoenix perform an exclusive acoustic version of their single “1901.”

I don’t know if it’s just my own particular mania, but the more time I spend focussing on this stuff, the less interested I am in the relatively superficial problems of money. Now it may sound like I’m being dismissive of something which is a real problem, that is the stress and anxiety that come with the power of the monetary value of everyday life. But the funny part is, since I’ve watched this video and had time to think about it’s meaning, the clearer it becomes to me that those superficial monetary values hold little to no value when applied to the level of knowledge I exert within my job each and every day.

Siri, Apple, and the future of Mobile

As of April 28th 2010, Apple acquired the personal assistant mobile application Siri. For those of you who are not familiar with Siri, let me give you a quick taste. Early this March, Siri made its first notable appearance at SXSW, being named the Most Innovative Web Technology at SXSW (South By Southwest). Since then Siri has generated a lot of buzz about its proven potential. What makes Siri so notable is its voice interaction and control. The app is a personal assistant that runs on voice command. So, what is so exciting about Siri? For most mobile users, the key interaction revolves around getting things accomplished in a short, easy manner. Siri does just that, it gets things done. Currently, Siri is capable of learning voice recognition, search patterns, and personal preferences. It can search for a dinner venue, tell you the music that will be playing, what type of cuisine they serve, and then place a reservation for you. It is from start to finish a mobile personal assistant.

In 1969, a 14 year-old Beatle fanatic namer Jerry Levitan had the opportunity to interview John Lennon. Armed with just a reel-to-reel tape deck, Levitan snuck into Lennon’s hotel room in Toronto and convinced him to do an interview. And now 38 years later here sits a short film made about the interview that took place. The video work is amazing and when combined with the interview it reaches an entirely new level. Hope you enjoy the inspiring words of the legend as much as I did.

The Morning Benders teamed up with some of San Francisco’s finest guitar players, string players, drummers, and The Big Echo Orchestra to rework Phil Spector’s Wall of Sound. Channelling the musical legend, they set out to perform their song “Excuses” in a slamfest of musical exploration. Here is the letter they wrote Phil!

As an avid Iphone user and Apple geek, I am very dedicated to most of their products. Apple has created some of the greatest technologies that have changed the ways in which we live our lives. The Iphone is one the greatest examples of that. Since the Iphones inception it has completely revolutionized the ways in which we think about mobile devices and communication. Since the Iphones entrance to the mobile platform there have been many other companies who have tried to recreate what the Iphone encompasses. The Nexus One is a great example of this. The Nexus One is a great competitor to the Iphone in many areas but has fallen short in a number.

Live Interactive Presentation

Interactive performance is a new way to engage people in their surroundings, giving them a break from the monotony of their everyday encounters. Many different artists have played with the limits of human interaction with technology. In an attempt to acknowledge these limits, I created a live video and music performance that reacted to movement. As people passed and interacted with the cameras, the musical and video algorithms that I had applied beforehand were performed, each creating either a change in music or video sequencing.

With the short set up and presentation time of only 3 hours, I was able to capture limited footage to present after the initial act. This video highlights some of the video and musical performance that took place as I monitored the interactions over those 3 hours.

Chrome OS for 2010

Google today held a preview event for Chrome OS, the company's forthcoming browser-based operating system scheduled to launch initially on netbooks in late 2010. Among the major announcements was that, like Google's Chrome browser, Chrome OS has been open-sourced as "Chromium OS" to allow any interested developers to contribute to developing the best possible operating system.

“Today we are open-sourcing the project as Chromium OS. We are doing this early, a year before Google Chrome OS will be ready for users, because we are eager to engage with partners, the open source community and developers. As with the Google Chrome browser, development will be done in the open from this point on. This means the code is free, accessible to anyone and open for contributions. The Chromium OS project includes our current code base, user interface experiments and some initial designs for ongoing development. This is the initial sketch and we will color it in over the course of the next year.”

Xobni is a great little Outlook Plugin (for those of you who use Outlook) that allows you to search contact info in a completely new way. The plugin has become a must-have for improving enterprising capabilities within companies. Adam gives a great insight to the journey he experienced in the startup process and evolution of his company. The video is fairly lengthy but is well worth the time.

As we continue to grow and learn the capability of technology, we begin to understand the possibility to advance our everyday lives with this new medium.

A short video piece by Rowan Pybus, Faith47 and inge Beckmann. This is the third in a series of videos that Faith47 and Rowan Pybus are working on. The video is a highly poetic piece that is enhanced by phenomenal cinematography. The more I watch it, the more engaged I become with the feeling of vacancy and awe inspiring artistic creations that drove both the project and the subsequent video. “Everybody needs a hug sometimes!” - Jeanie Kirkpatrick

As I grew into a young adult and yearned for separation from adolescence and acceptance into manhood, in an attempt to act manly, I would constantly argue that I did not want a hug, nor did I need one. As any good mother would do, mine continued to hug me despite my best efforts to avoid the sometimes awkward exchange of affection. Needless to say, as much as I pretended I didn’t like it, deep down I knew that it was a sign that she cared for me. Everyone needs someone to care for them at some point in their lives and a hug is one of the simplest expressions of such feelings. The Free Hugs Campaign is just another great example of the impact a small gesture can have on an individuals life.
